Preparing your move

Your first month in a new city: hotel, mid-term rental or coliving

A flexible week to land, a month or more to learn the neighbourhoods and only then a long lease. What to ask at each stage.

Nomad Hub editorial team · Editorial update:

Think in stages, not one booking

Arriving in a new city with a one-year lease signed remotely is risky: you do not know the neighbourhoods, the noise or how the internet works in that flat. A more careful sequence has three stages. A few flexible nights to land, a stay of one to three months to test the area and, once you know where you want to live, a longer rental. Each stage has different questions.

The first nights: flexibility first

For arrival, a hotel or holiday apartment with free cancellation works. Check the final price with local fees and taxes, the check-in time and how to get there from the airport without mobile data. If you arrive with an eSIM, activate it before travelling. This is not the stage to optimise the nightly rate: it gives you room if the flight changes or the area does not convince you.

Mid-term stays: the contract matters

Monthly rental platforms let you settle in without signing a long lease. Before booking, check the contract type, deposit, which bills are included and the cancellation policy. In Spain, a seasonal rental is a lease for use other than a permanent home, with its own rules. If you are applying for residence, ask whether the contract lets you register your address: in Spain you need that registration for the fingerprint appointment and the health card.

Coliving: community in exchange for privacy

Coliving adds a workspace and people with your routine from day one, which matters a lot when you arrive knowing nobody. In exchange, you share spaces and it usually costs more per square metre. Ask about the room type, whether there is a desk or workspace with long hours, how many people share the connection and what happens if you want to leave early. Ask for a recent speed test taken where you will work.

How to compare without getting lost

Always compare the total monthly cost: rent, bills, cleaning, deposit and platform fees. Monthly discounts vary a lot between options. In accommodation and coliving we set out the criteria and the providers we mention, and each city guide covers neighbourhoods and places to work.

Take this next step

  • First nights with flexible cancellation.
  • A mid-term contract that lets you register your address if you will need to.
  • A recent speed test and somewhere to work outside the bedroom.
  • Total price with bills, cleaning, deposit and fees.

Keep planning your journey
