White Card: who can apply

It is granted to third-country nationals with a verified employment relationship outside Hungary, or a share in a company with verified profits abroad, who work or run that company from Hungary using digital technology. The holder cannot carry out gainful activity in Hungary or hold a share in a Hungarian company; doing so means the permit is withdrawn.

Income and documents

You are considered to have sufficient means if your legal monthly income is at least €3,000 net for the six months before entry, and you must keep it throughout the stay. You need an employer statement on its activities, the authorised remote work and your position, plus six months of bank statements or a certificate of regular income.

Validity, extension and family

The document is valid for at most one year and can be extended once for another year for the same purpose. Family members of a White Card holder cannot get residence through family reunification, except in cases such as children born during its validity. You apply at a Hungarian diplomatic mission or, for visa-exempt nationals, online through Enter Hungary or at a regional directorate.

Taxes and tax residence

For a non-EU citizen without long-term residence, the income tax law treats them as resident if their only permanent home is in Hungary, their centre of vital interests is in the country, or their habitual abode is in Hungary when the previous tests cannot be determined. There is no automatic 183-day rule as there is for EU citizens.
