Spain, Portugal, Greece or Croatia: where should you start?

Four European destinations, different residence pathways. Compare what matters before choosing your next base.

Nomad Hub editorial team · Editorial update:

Your profile first, then the view

If you have EU/EEA/Swiss citizenship, start with the mobility rules that apply to you. This comparison's nomad pathways target third-country nationals. For them, employment, services and owning a company matter: these profiles do not produce the same application.

Use the guides as an initial map. The authority and competent consulate are the next step for checking nationality, documents and application location. Your favourite photo can start the search; the pathway you can document lets you build the plan.

Income: compare like with like

Portugal links its reference to four minimum wages; Croatia, to average net salary. Greece specifies net income for work earnings. Spain uses minimum wage, with calculation still pending in this guide. A euro column cannot rank eligibility without considering year, period and family.

Do not confuse entry with your new routine

Visa, permit and tourist-stay durations differ. Check which document authorises you, what follows and what happens at expiry. The table summarises pathways; nuances, changes and unresolved questions live in each country guide.

Your decision has a tax dimension too

Before committing to housing, connect stay dates, work and previous residence. Review taxes in both countries and any applicable treaty. Then add actual housing, connectivity and cover costs. We do not use unconfirmed tax advantages to sell a destination.
