DTV for remote work
The Foreign Ministry presents it as a visa for foreigners travelling as tourists while working remotely: skilled professionals, freelancers and remote workers, as well as people doing activities such as Muay Thai or cooking courses. You prove eligibility with an employment contract or certificate from a company abroad, or a professional portfolio showing you work as a digital nomad or freelancer.
Savings, fee and consulate requirements
You must show bank statements with funds of at least THB 500,000. The fee and some documents depend on the embassy: London charges GBP 300 and asks for proof of permanent UK residence and a police certificate less than six months old; the embassy in Belgium charges EUR 350. Processing takes about four weeks.
Validity, stays and family
The DTV is valid for five years with multiple entries. Each stay lasts up to 180 days and can be extended once in the country at Immigration for up to another 180 days; after that you must leave and re-enter. The holder's partner and children under 20 can obtain the same type of visa by showing proof of the relationship.
Taxes and tax residence
The Revenue Department treats as resident anyone living in Thailand for more than 180 days in total during a tax year, which is the calendar year. With 180-day stays that can be extended, it is easy to pass that limit: keep a record of your entries and exits to know your position each year.
